The innovative educator Dr. Jessie Royer-Greaves, who recognized that there were many blind children denied an education because of their inability to attain IQ levels required by schools for disabled children, founded the school in 1921. Establishing a school to educate and train this student population was a pioneering concept, the first of its kind in the nation. The school has had a residential program since its inception and continues to operate seven (7) days a week, 365 days a year. The school also serves students who reside with their families or in group homes.
