PBPA Mourns Passing of Cordine Scartozzi

Cordine Scartozzi

Cordine (“Cordi”) Scartozzi, a Paoli legend and business leader passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 12, 2017. A lifelong resident of Chester County, PA, he was born in Strafford on July 22, 1923 to Camillo and Adelina (Chiappini) Scartozzi.

Cordi worked in the hardware business from the time he was a young man until his recent illness. He began as an employee of Strafford Hardware and established his own store, The Hardware Center (Paoli Hardware), in 1951. During World War II, he served as a medic in the Pacific Region.

Cordi was an active member of the Devon-Strafford Lions Club and served for many years on Malvern Federal Bank’s Board of Directors. He was honored as the 1976 Paoli Business Person of the Year, and honored again in 2014 when the Scartozzi Family won the award. He was an avid golfer, a devoted family man, and enjoyed playing cards with his buddies.

George Steinmetz, Paoli Business & Professional Association President, recalls Cordi on the board of Malvern Bank. “He was pleasure to serve with on the board and other board members always listened intently to what he had to say. He was very insightful and had a good sense of humor.”

Judy Huey, Paoli business leader and co-owner of Paoli Village Shoppes, commented, “Yes, Cordie was the patriarch of The Hardware Store, with its long tradition of service to our community. Even more, though, along with his brother Mario, Sam Pilotti, Ed Shanaughy, my dad and his partner, Stan Luongo, and a few others who predeceased him, Cordie was also one of the true “old guard” of Paoli, responsible for making Paoli what it is—and paving the way for what it will be in the future. Such history…so many wonderful stories from Paoli past…so many secrets…that are lost with the passing of these men. Cordie will certainly be missed in our community.”

The Paoli Business Association has made a donation in the name of Cordine Scartozzi to the Paoli Hospital Foundation, 255 West Lancaster Ave, Paoli Pa 19301 and others are welcome to do the same.
